Whether for interiors or exteriors of vehicles, 3D scanning for automotive product development offers enormous advantages. Accessories like protective films/wraps usually called as Vehicle Skin developed by a powerful tool with greater accuracy using a reverse engineering software called Geomagic Design X. The typical process for extracting the prototype of protective film or wrap or a Car’s skin is to first 3D scan the whole car using a 3D scanner. A process like this requires high data accuracy for the protection film to be tightly fitted on the vehicle with clear edges, right sizes but without wrinkles. A handheld 3D scanner is more suitable for this high-precision work. The 3D CAD model of the Car is imported in Geomagic Design X to process the curve surface development. Based on the developed surface of scanned data, curves are drawn to get the exclusive automotive prototype drawing used for protective film cutting. The CAD data of this prototype are given to the customer in the desirable format. These prototypes data is fed into the film cutter equipment to get the relevant shapes for production.
